Texas to cut Planned Parenthood off from Medicaid

Texas officials delivered a final legal notice to Planned Parenthood Tuesday, informing the organization it will no longer receive funding from the state’s Medicaid program, according to The Hill.

The change will take effect in 30 days unless Planned Parenthood files an appeal with the state, according to the report.

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbot and state officials first began their pursuit to end Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood last year when controversial undercover videos emerged in which it appears the organization’s officials discussed “harvesting” fetal tissue from abortion procedures. However, Planned Parenthood fully denied the allegations and the videos were proven to be significantly edited, according to the report.

Texas’ Planned Parenthood affiliates use money from Medicaid to support family planning and women’s health services. The organization’s abortion services do not receive public funding, according to the report.

Planned Parenthood will likely appeal the decision in federal court, according to The Hill.
