Steward Health Care Joins Tufts Medical Center’s Nonprofit Insurer Network

Minuteman Health, a nonprofit health insurer in Massachusetts, has added Boston-based Steward Health Care System’s 11 hospitals to its provider network.

Minuteman Health is a Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan, which were created under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Tufts Medical Center in Boston, physician network New England Quality Care Alliance and Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare Corp. operate the plan and received an $88.5 million loan from CMS to start it. Vanguard Health Systems had been an original sponsor, but Tenet officially absorbed Vanguard at the beginning of this month.

The addition of Steward brings Minuteman Health’s insurance network to 25 hospitals and more than 6,000 physicians, making it one of the most expansive CO-OPs in the country.
