States ranked by percentage of uninsured residents in 2021

Texas has the highest percentage of uninsured residents in the country and Massachusetts has the lowest, according to American Community Survey data released Sept. 15 by the Census Bureau.

The ACS estimates are based on data collected from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2021.

States ranked by the total uninsured rate of their noninstitutionalized population:

Texas: 18 percent

Oklahoma: 13.8 percent

Georgia: 12.6 percent

Wyoming: 12.2 percent

Florida: 12.1 percent

Mississippi: 11.9 percent

Nevada: 11.6 percent

Alaska: 11.4 percent

Arizona: 10.7 percent

North Carolina: 10.4 percent

South Carolina: 10 percent

New Mexico: 10 percent

Tennessee: 10 percent

Alabama: 9.9 percent

South Dakota: 9.5 percent

Missouri: 9.4 percent

Arkansas: 9.2 percent

Kansas: 9.2 percent

Utah: 9 percent

Idaho: 8.8 percent

Montana: 8.2 percent

Colorado: 8 percent

North Dakota: 7.9 percent

Louisiana: 7.6 percent

Indiana: 7.5 percent

New Jersey: 7.2 percent

Nebraska: 7.1 percent

California: 7 percent

Illinois: 7 percent

Virginia: 6.8 percent

Ohio: 6.5 percent

Washington: 6.4 percent

West Virginia: 6.1 percent

Maryland: 6.1 percent
