Small-business-focused payer Sana expands to Alabama

Sana, a health insurance startup offering plans to small businesses, is expanding to Alabama.

According to a Sept. 14 news release, the business also entered Indiana and Virginia markets this year and plans to continue expanding.

In 2019, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama had 97 percent of the small group insurance market share in the state, according to Kaiser Family Foundation data cited in the release.

"We're on a mission to make quality healthcare understandable, accessible and affordable to as many Americans as possible," Sana co-founder and CEO Will Young said. "We're excited to offer Alabama a better alternative to the same restrictive networks and sky-high 'negotiated rates' that have dominated the market for decades."

Sana was founded in 2017 and is currently available to employers in Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia.
