‘Our work has just begun’: North Carolina Senate OKs Medicaid expansion

Medicaid expansion in North Carolina passed through the state Senate with near unanimous approval, but is expected to face a much tougher challenge in the House, the Carolina Journal reported June 2.

The Senate approved Medicaid expansion in a 44-2 vote, according to the report. Sen. Ralph Hise said the Senate is seeking expansion now because of inflation and lack of access to care. He cited a 2021 WalletHub study that ranked the state 49 out of 51 for healthcare costs.

The bill now moves to the North Carolina House of Representatives, but Senate Leader Phil Berger said he and his colleagues will have their work cut out to persuade House members to vote for its passage, according to the report.

“Quite frankly, our work has just begun,” Mr. Berger said, according to the report. “For this to become law, there are 120 people on the other side of this building that we’ve got to start working on.”
