Optum launched Specialty Fusion Feb. 17, a new solution from the UnitedHealth Group subsidiary that allows payers and providers to manage specialty drug treatments with real-time data.

The program targets patients with complex conditions and aims to drive down costs of medication. Early on, Specialty Fusion has saved patients 17 percent on medical and drug costs, as well as streamlining treatment approvals for patients, according to the company.

Specialty Fusion also looks to address burdens associated with prior authorization by giving providers the ability to kick off the approval process from one portal. At the same time, the system offers users several alternative treatments and lower-cost options.

“Managing specialty drugs at the earliest possible moment is critical to improving care, clinical outcomes and the patient experience,” said Sarah Dye, senior vice president of Optum Health. “Optum Specialty Fusion uniquely partners with the provider to change the status quo of prior authorization, reduce their administrative pain and ultimately help them provide better care for their patients.”

At the Becker's 5th Annual Fall Payer Issues Roundtable, taking place November 17–19 in Chicago, payer executives and healthcare leaders will come together to discuss value-based care, regulatory changes, cost management strategies and innovations shaping the future of payer-provider collaboration.
