North Carolina to take action against Medicaid reimbursement delays

North Carolina Medicaid Deputy Secretary Dave Richard told WCNC the Medicaid reimbursement delays the state’s healthcare businesses are experiencing are unacceptable.

“We’re fixing it,” he said.

Complaints regarding payment delays arrived in the wake of North Carolina’s transition to Medicaid managed care July 1. The state reported a 12 percent claim denial rate in early August, WCNC said Aug. 4.

Mr. Richard attributed the reimbursement delays to technical issues with provider coding in the claims process. He also said the state and private companies running North Carolina’s Medicaid program are willing to provide advances to businesses in critical need while they wait for their payments.

Medicaid covers 1.6 million North Carolina residents, WCNC said.
