The measure, introduced by Rep. Deborah Armstrong, D-Albuquerque, would allow residents to pay a monthly premium to New Mexico to access Medicaid coverage. The buy-in option aims to create an affordable health insurance option for residents who make too much to qualify for Medicaid or other subsidies under the ACA, but still can’t afford healthcare.
New Mexico’s Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham supported the proposal while campaigning in 2018. Her budget recommendation for the upcoming fiscal year earmarks some initial funding for the proposal, according to the report.
