New Mexico launching healthcare price transparency database

The New Mexico Department of Health is planning to launch a health insurance claims database that will be fully operational late next year.

The all-payer claims database is designed to monitor the growth of costs and make prices charged by providers and insurers across the state more accessible and transparent, according to an Aug. 10 health department news release.

The state-mandated database will collect claims data from insured patients who receive care in New Mexico, the health department said. Any time an insured person receives medical, dental or pharmaceutical care, the care setting will be required to submit a claim for services to be paid to the insurance company. The amount paid will then be submitted to the database. Other data to be submitted will include claims data for Medicare and Medicaid, patient eligibility information and healthcare provider information for physicians and facilities.

New Mexico is working with health data and analytics company Milliman MedInsight on the database, according to the health department. Milliman MedInsight has performed similar work in Utah, Virginia and New Hampshire.
