New Hampshire to repay nearly $8M in Medicaid funds after HHS audit

New Hampshire has agreed to give back more than $7.9 million to the federal government after an audit found that more than 90 percent claims for opioid treatment services did not comply with Medicaid requirements, New Hampshire Public Radio reported July 21.

The audit, conducted by the HHS Office of the Inspector General, found that opioid treatment programs did not have proper documentation, drug-testing frequency and counseling hours, according to the report. New Hampshire also lacked resources to effectively enforce state and federal opioid treatment standards, the report stated.

Claims made between July 2016 and July 2019 were examined in the audit.

State Medicaid director Henry Lipman said he takes the findings seriously and is working to improve oversight, according to the report.
