More payers move to cover telehealth abortions

More insurers are contracting with telehealth-only abortion clinics, The New York Times reported April 18.

Hey Jane, a telehealth medication abortion provider with no physical locations, contracted with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Connecticut, Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield of New York and small business plan administrator Sana. 

Hey Jane is also in network with Aetna in eight states, the Times reported. 

Insurers face a patchwork of regulations for abortion care — some states require private payers to cover abortions, while others bar it. 

Gaby Santana, head of business at Hey Jane, told the Times not all payers are buying into virtual-only abortion clinics. Some require live video visits, or only contract with clinics that have physical locations. 

“Our goal is to make this as big and accessible as possible,” Ms. Santana said. “That’s why we want to bring on more states and more payers.”
