Missouri is implementing a new law to enforce a federal mental health parity law, making it the final state to do so.

Insurance providers throughout the state have until Jan. 1 to comply with the federal law, which ensures that mental healthcare treatment is covered like physical healthcare, according to the Columbia Missourian.

States have been responsible for rolling out enforcement to ensure compliance as insurers have found loopholes in federal enforcement measures.

“Hopefully, this is just another recognition moving forward that mental health is simply a health condition,” said state Sen. Greg Razer, D-Kansas City.
