Missouri employers end domestic partner coverage in wake of same-sex marriage ruling

In light of the Supreme Court’s legalization of same-sex marriage, some Missouri employers are dropping health coverage for their employees’ domestic partners, reports St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare, the area’s biggest employer, ended domestic partnership health coverage for its employees at the start of 2016. Media company Lee Enterprises, which owns the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, will also discontinue its domestic partner coverage next year, among others.

For a domestic partner to be included in an employee’s health benefits, that employee usually has to show the two have a joint banking account or lease extending more than six months, according to the report. In comparison, married couples are usually required to provide a marriage certificate.
