The final version of the legislation was presented to the Senate on May 2 after House Speaker Jason White said his team was submitting a voter referendum, which would have allowed lawmakers to put expansion on the November ballot, according to the report. The proposal would have included an option for voters to decide if the expansion should include a work requirement.
The Senate did not vote on that proposal, which was opposed by several members of the body. The Senate’s inaction killed the bill.
Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann, who leads the Senate, said he hopes to bring back expansion legislation next year, according to the report. Mr. White said it was unclear whether the House would consider Medicaid expansion in the next few years.
