Michigan lawmaker to introduce single-payer healthcare bill

Michigan state Rep. Yousef Rabhi is planning to introduce legislation proposing a state-run, single-payer healthcare system, the Detroit Metro Times reported March 23.

5 things to know:

1.The plan, dubbed MiCare, would cover dental, mental health, vision and all other physical needs, according to the Detroit Metro Times.

2. The plan would not go into effect until voters approve a funding mechanism.

3. About 500,000 Michigan residents are uninsured, Rabhi told the publication.

4. The bill is co-signed by 12 representatives but likely will have a hard time getting most Republicans and many centrist Democrats on board, the Detroit Metro Times said.

5. Rabhi proposed a similar bill in 2018, though it did not gain traction.
