Medicare members received COVID-19 tests they didn’t ask for in fraud scheme

Some Medicare beneficiaries received dozens of at-home COVID-19 tests they did not request as fraudsters rushed to exploit government coverage of the tests before the public health emergency expired, KFF Health News and NPR reported May 18.

Consumer advocacy organizations reported an uptick in COVID-19-related fraud schemes in Medicare in recent months, and the HHS’ Office of the Inspector General posted a warning urging Medicare beneficiaries to report these scams.

Medicare directors in New York, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas and Utah reported an uptick in COVID-19 test fraud cases to KFF Health News and NPR.

Fraudsters obtained members’ Medicare ID numbers then billed the government program for reimbursement for the tests, according to the report. One Indiana woman received 32 unrequested tests in the span of 10 days.

As of the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency on May 11, Medicare no longer reimburses at-home COVID-19 tests.
