Only 20% of Humana members are currently enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans with at least four stars for 2026, according to regulatory filings from the insurer.
Preliminary 2026 Medicare Advantage star ratings data was available on CMS plan finder on Oct. 1. Based on this data, Humana held an average star rating of 3.61.
“We’re not satisfied with those results, to be very clear,” said Humana CEO Jim Rechtin in an Oct. 2 investor call. “However, they are in line with expectations.”
The 2026 results follow a federal judge’s dismissal of a lawsuit from the insurer challenging its 2025 star ratings.
Mr. Rechtin said the company had limited time to “address performance gaps” after learning about changing thresholds in September 2024, but he believes these moves “have provided a strong footing” going forward.
Humana reaffirmed its earning guidance for 2025 as well, and Mr. Rechtin emphasized Humana’s contract diversification strategy.
“We have analyzed adverse selection and member profitability carefully and repeatedly, and based on everything we know today, we feel good about our pricing,” Mr. Rechtin said. “We expect a meaningfully greater number of members in four- and 4.5-star contracts than the current projections that are based on our historical contract mix.”
