Medicare Advantage plans ramp up lobbying efforts

Medicare Advantage insurers are ramping up efforts to persuade lawmakers to increase funding for the program, Politico reported Nov. 11. 

The Better Medicare Alliance, an insurer-backed advocacy group, plans to demonstrate to lawmakers that plan offerings and benefits are shrinking, according to Politico. 

An analysis from Avalere, commissioned by the Better Medicare Alliance, found that there will be around 7% fewer Medicare Advantage plans offered in 2025 than in 2024, and fewer plans will offer some types of supplemental benefits. 

"We really want to stress that there has been a lot happening with Medicare Advantage, and now we’re seeing the real-world impacts of that," Rebecca Buck, senior vice president of communications at the alliance, told Politico. 

CMS is phasing in changes to the risk adjustment model used to reimburse MA plans over three years. Insurers say the changes amount to a funding cut.

Facing rising medical costs and lowered reimbursement, many insurers chose to exit plans and roll back benefits for 2025. 

Wall Street analysts expect the second Trump Administration to boost rates for MA plans, according to Bloomberg.
