Wisconsin governor shuts down ‘inflammatory,’ ‘unnecessary’ bill aimed at immigrant Medicaid access

Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Tony Evers vetoed a State Assembly bill that prevents immigrants lacking permanent legal status from getting healthcare reimbursement Dec. 5, despite these individuals already being ineligible to enroll in BadgerCare Plus, Wisconsin’s Medicaid program.

While Wisconsin currently doesn’t allow such individuals to enroll in Medicaid, “this bill preemptively ensures that Wisconsin does not become like Minnesota or Illinois,” Republican State Rep. Alex Dallman said in testimony.

“I am vetoing this bill in its entirety because I object to Republican lawmakers passing legislation they acknowledge is unnecessary to prevent,” Mr. Evers said. “These basic but important admissions by its own co-authors underscore that Republicans’ decision to pass this bill was more about being inflammatory, stoking fear and sowing division than it was about accomplishing any significant policy outcome or being prudent stewards of taxpayer dollars.”
