Medicaid in the headlines: 10 recent updates

Medicaid redeterminations are continuing, with more than 3.7 million people removed from the program since April, according to KFF. Recent survey results show many enrollees say their health plan has not reached out to them about how to renew their coverage, and around 140,000 applied for marketplace coverage in the first month of redeterminations. 

Here are 10 key updates about the program Becker's has published since July 25. 

  1. In less than two years, Aetna's Medicaid program in Florida is now below the national average for NICU births through a partnership with ProgenyHealth, a case management platform serving mothers and their newborn children. Aetna Better Health Florida CEO Jennifer Sweet sat down with Becker's to explain the program's success.
  1. A large number of Medicaid enrollees, especially seniors, say their health plan has not reached out about how to renew coverage amid redeterminations, according to a new survey.
  1. Federal and state-based insurance marketplaces received around 140,000 applications from people who previously had Medicaid coverage in April, according to data from CMS.
  1. CMS approved a proposal from California to eliminate asset tests for Medicaid eligibility. A state law passed in 2021 directs the state to eliminate the asset test entirely at the start of 2024.

  2. Early data from Medicaid redeterminations is in line with Centene's expectations for membership losses, executives told investors. According to the company's second-quarter earnings report, the company's Medicaid membership was 16,059,600, down 262,700 from the end of the first quarter.
  1. Molina Healthcare's Medicaid membership declined 93,000 in the second quarter, which was well within expectations, CEO Joe Zubretsky said on the company's second-quarter earnings call. 
  1. Michigan will give Medicaid enrollees an extra month to return enrollment forms before their coverage is terminated through 2024, after a previous extension resulted in 15,000 additional renewals in the state. 
  1. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper's administration has said the state's Medicaid expansion will take effect Oct. 1, but the Legislature has not approved the funding needed to launch the program. Funding for the expansion is linked to the passage of the state's 2023-24 budget, but lawmakers remained deadlocked and are on break until Aug. 7. 
  1. Nine state Medicaid programs currently cover Wegovy, Novo Nordisk's high-priced weight loss drug, according to Bloomberg Law. 

  2. There is wide variation in Medicaid disenrollment rates across reporting states, ranging from 82 percent in Texas to 10 percent in Michigan. Here are the state-reported Medicaid disenrollments as a share of total completed renewals in 32 states and Washington, D.C.
