Medicaid enrollment reached an all-time high of 74 million members during the pandemic, a result of a rule change featured in Congress' first coronavirus relief law last year, according to The Washington Post.
Under the law, states received additional federal aid provided they did not remove Medicaid coverage from anyone until the public health emergency's end. As a result, Medicaid enrollment increased by 9.7 million members between February 2020 and January 2021, the article said.
Though Medicaid enrollment numbers often shifted before the pandemic due to the fluctuating incomes of its members, states suspended periodic eligibility checks during the pandemic.
President Joe Biden's administration said the public health emergency will continue through the end of this year.
