McKinsey to pay $78M to health plans in opioid settlement

McKinsey and Company agreed to pay $78 million to health plans to settle allegations the consulting firm helped Purdue Pharma create misleading advertising campaigns for opioids, The Hill reported Dec. 30.

The proposed settlement was filed in federal district court in California Dec. 29. It must be approved by a judge.

The lawsuit was brought by a group of health insurers and company plans, The Hill reported.

McKinsey has settled a series of lawsuits from states, local governments and Native American tribes. In 2021, the consulting firm paid $573 million to 47 states to settle allegations it advised Purdue Pharma to ramp up sales of OxyContin.

In a previous statement, McKinsey said it continues to believe its previous work was lawful. The company stopped advising clients on any opioid-related business in 2019.
