Single adults ages 18-34 who make under $50,000 a year and families making less than $100,000 are eligible for the subsidized coverage. Officials say that an adult making $30,000 a year now has access to a gold-level plan for as little as $1 a month — a plan that previously would have cost up to $70 a month.

The subsidy is part of a two-year pilot program — that could be made permanent — funded by Maryland’s reinsurance program, according to marylandreporter.com.

The subsidy is modeled after a Massachusetts bill that sought to lower insurance costs, the publication reported.
