Lifespan may no longer accept Cigna insurance

Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan, the state's biggest health system, might not accept Cigna Healthcare insurance moving forward if an agreement over contract negotiations cannot be met by March 31.

"Good faith negotiations are continuing with Lifespan on a fair, reasonable contract in line with other local providers that will keep health care affordable for our customers and their families," a spokesperson for Cigna said in a statement shared with Becker's

Both parties are hopeful that an agreement can be reached before the existing contract expires on March 31, the spokesperson said.

Lifespan is a nonprofit health system that features five hospitals; Gateway Healthcare, a nonprofit behavioral health organization; Lifespan Physician Group; and CoastalMedical, a primary care medical practice.

Becker's has reached out to Lifespan for comment and will update this story as more information becomes available.
