A federal judge has certified a class-action lawsuit against Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana that alleges the payer denied thousands of “large dollar” claims, the Daily Montanan reported June 16.
The lawsuit alleges that the company routinely denies claims of more than $50,000 using a formulaic procedure that intentionally doesn’t ask for documentation or support for medical procedures, according to the report. The procedure allegedly does not use specialists when reviewing medical records.
Judge Brian Morris approved class-action status for the lawsuit, stating in his decision that BCBS Montana’s parent company, Health Care Service Corp., “provided no substantive response” to the motion for class certification, according to the report.
HCSC told the new outlet that it does not comment on pending litigation.
