Instacart to accept FSA, HSA payments

Instacart customers will soon be able to directly purchase groceries using their flexible savings- and health savings accounts.

Beginning Dec. 4, Instacart will enable FSA and HSA payment acceptance for every retailer on its app that offers eligible products, according to a Nov. 6 news release. Instacart's service area reaches 95% of the U.S. population through a network of more than 80,000 stores and 1,400 retail partners. In 2023, the company became the first online grocery service to allow customers to pay for products with SNAP benefits in all 50 states.

An FSA and HSA virtual shop and eligible product tags will also be added to the company's app.

The new payment options come alongside the announcement of Instacart Health Wallet, which will combine payment methods on the app to include FSA, HSA, SNAP, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid and other supplemental grocery and over-the-counter benefits.

Instacart has previously launched partnerships with Boston Children's Hospital, New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System, Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente, Alignment Health and Centene's Medicaid plan in Kentucky.
