Independence Health Group sees 13% revenue growth in 2021

Philadelphia-based Independence Health Group, the parent company of Independence Blue Cross, released its 2021 financial results April 12.

Eight key takeaways from the report: 

  1. Total revenue was $24.7 billion in 2021, up $2.9 billion or 13.3 percent from 2020.
  2. Healthcare funds under management were $34.5 billion in 2021, up from $29.5 billion in 2020.
  3. Revenue growth was partially offset by ongoing COVID-19 support, which totaled over $600 million in 2021.
  4. Independence received five out of give stars from CMS for the Independence Blue Cross Keystone 65 HMO plan and 4.5 stars for the Personal Choice 65 PPO plan.
  5. Independence made $50 million in foundation contributions to communities in 2021.
  6. Net income in 2021 was $816 million, partially because of strong net investment income of $248 million, pretax. 
  7. Net income margin in 2021 was 3.3 percent of total revenue, up from 2.8 percent in 2020.
  8. Independence paid more than $900 million total in federal, state and local non-payroll taxes, and state premium taxes and other Affordable Care Act-related taxes and fees.
