Illinois governor signs bill requiring payers to cover glucose monitors

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed legislation June 15 that requires payers to cover continuous glucose monitors for diabetes patients beginning in 2024.

Senate Bill 2969 requires group and individual health plans and managed care plans to cover continuous glucose monitors when medically necessary for individuals with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. 

“No one—regardless of their socioeconomic status or insurance coverage—should go without the care they require,” Gov. Pritzker said. “That is an unacceptable burden to ask diabetics to bear, and this legislation will ensure insurance companies support these essential devices and those that use them”
