Illinois gears up for transition to state-based insurance marketplace

On Nov. 1, current Healthcare.gov enrollees in Illinois will move to state-based health insurance marketplace, Get Covered Illinois, for their 2026 coverage, according to a news release confirming CMS approval this summer.

In 2023, Illinois passed a law instituting a state-run ACA exchange on the federal platform for 2025 and a fully state-based marketplace for 2026. As of August, 20 states operate their own exchanges entirely, according to CMS.

While Illinois is the only state transitioning for the 2026 plan year, Oregon plans to follow in 2027.

“At a time when the federal government is announcing healthcare cuts, Illinois is investing in building a marketplace that aims to increase access to health coverage for our residents,” said Illinois Department of Insurance Director Ann Gillespie.
