Humana in the headlines: 10 recent updates

Humana named a new CEO who will take the helm of the company in 2024 and plans to acquire several new primary care clinics from Cano Health. 

Here are 10 updates about the Louisville, Ky.-based payer Becker's has covered since Sept. 12. 

  1. Starting in 2024, all of Humana's Medicare Advantage plans designed for veterans will be co-branded with USAA. 

  1. Humana was the top-ranked insurer for customer satisfaction in 2023, according to the American Customer Satisfaction Index. 

  1. Envision Healthcare president and CEO Jim Rechtin will be Humana's next CEO. Current CEO Bruce Broussard plans to step down from his role in the second half of 2024, the company said. Mr. Rechtin will join Humana as chief operating officer in January and transition to the CEO role later in 2024. Here are five things to know about Mr. Rechtin. 

  1. Charles Health System in Bend, Ore., will no longer be in-network with Humana and Centene subsidiaries HealthNet and WellCare Medicare Advantage plans in 2024. The health system cited "continued, unresolved concerns about patient care and administrative burden" as the reason for the break. 

  1. Humana is expanding its Medicare Advantage plans to 39 new counties across 14 states and Washington, D.C., totaling an additional 762,000 Medicare-eligible individuals. The company's expansion plan includes offering D-SNPs in 116 counties and its veteran-focused plans in 84 new counties. 

  1. Humana was one of 11 payers named among Newsweek's 2023 America's Greatest Workplaces for Parents and Families. 

  1. Humana and UnitedHealthcare account for nearly half of Medicare Advantage enrollment, but just 20 percent of television advertising for MA plans, according to a report from KFF. 

  1. Miami-based primary care provider Cano Health is selling the bulk of its centers in Texas and Nevada to Humana's CentwerWell. The $66.7 million value of the sale is made up of $35.4 million in cash and the release of certain Cano liabilities, Cano Health said. 

  1. Humana ranked 32nd on Time's list of the 750 "best" companies in the world. 

  1. Humana offers the best Medicare supplement plan in 2023, according to a ranking published by Forbes Health.
