Humana focused on primary care over M&A after Kindred purchase

Humana says it is focusing on primary care opportunities over large-scale mergers and acquisitions in the future, according to Home Health Care News.

The Louisville, Ky.-based payer said March 15 that it would also divest from the company's majority position in hospice care.

"What we continue to prioritize are assets within our primary care space, potentially some within the home space," Humana CFO Susan Diamond said at the Barclays Global Healthcare Conference in Miami. "But we'd expect those to be smaller to sort of mid-size tuck-in opportunities that allow us to get greater scale more quickly, again, with an emphasis on primary care."

In August 2021, Humana finalized the largest transaction in the company's history by purchasing Atlanta-based hospice and home healthcare provider Kindred at Home for $5.7 billion.

Humana has moved Kindred's home healthcare services toward a value-based care model since then, but still plans to grow its fee-for-service model too, according to Home Health Care News.
