Humana creates chief risk officer position

Louisville, Ky.-based Humana appointed Sam Deshpande senior vice president and chief risk officer, a newly created position.

Here are four things to know.

1. In his role, Mr. Deshpande will oversee development of the payer’s chief risk office. He will report to Humana President and CEO Bruce Broussard.

2. The chief risk office will help Humana define risk across the company, with Mr. Deshpande establishing Humana’s risk strategy.

3. He joins Humana from McLean, Va.-based Capital One. He served the company for 17 years in various leadership positions, most recently as business chief risk officer for the U.S. and international card business.

4. Mr. Deshpande earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago; a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from Blacksburg-based Virginia Tech; and a bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur, India.
