Humana and healthcare technology company Athenahealth are expanding electronic prior authorization capabilities, spanning more than 180,000 clinicians in Athenahealth’s network.
According to a Nov. 3 news release, more than 6,000 providers processed almost 35,000 electronic prior authorization transactions with Humana in September. More than 70% of those were done without practice staff needing to give further information.
Humana can use AthenaPayer to connect with clinicians within the AthenaOne network, the release said. Athenahealth, Humana and health information network Availity have previously collaborated on prior authorization.
The update comes ahead of the next phase of the 2024 Interoperability and Prior Authorization Rule, with application programming interface provisions for payers going into effect in 2027. In May, CMS named Athenahealth as an early adopter within an electronic prior authorization initiative, building on earlier commitments from health plans, including Humana.
At the Becker's 5th Annual Fall Payer Issues Roundtable, taking place November 2–3 in Chicago, payer executives and healthcare leaders will come together to discuss value-based care, regulatory changes, cost management strategies and innovations shaping the future of payer-provider collaboration.
