How UnitedHealthcare cut employers' healthcare costs by 15%

UnitedHealthcare's deductible-free health plan saved money for employers and employees, according to an Oct. 5 news release from the insurer.

The Surest plan, which has no deductible and clear upfront pricing, saved employers up to 15% on healthcare costs on average, while saving employees 54% on out-of-pocket costs, according to the release.

Individuals with Surest coverage had 20% more physician visits and 9% more preventive visits than those with traditional coverage. Members with the plan were 15% more likely to receive mammograms and 34% more likely to receive colonoscopies than their peers with traditional coverage.

The employer-sponsored plan will be offered to more than 4.4 million employees for 2024. Surest was founded in 2016 as Bind Benefits and received investment backing from UnitedHealthcare, which eventually purchased a majority stake in the company.
