How many people could lose Medicaid coverage, state-by-state

Millions of people will no longer be covered by Medicaid over the next 14 months.

According to a report from the Urban Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, an estimated 18 million people will lose Medicaid coverage by June 2024, and 3.8 million of those will become uninsured.

On April 1, states can begin disenrolling members no longer eligible for the program for the first time since the COVID-19 public health emergency began in early 2020.

The Urban Institute and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation report, published in December 2022,  predicts Utah will have the highest share of members disenrolled. Fourteen states will have more than 20 percent of Medicaid members disenrolled, researchers estimated. The differences are mostly the result of higher enrollment increases and unemployment rates during the pandemic, according to the report.
