1. Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna reported first-quarter total revenue of $15.2 billion, down from $15.7 billion in the first quarter of fiscal year 2016. The payer ended the first quarter with a net loss of $381 million, compared to a net profit of $737 million in the same period of the year prior.
2. Anthem saw its revenue increase 11 percent to $22.5 billion in the first quarter of this year, up from $20.3 billion in the same period in 2016.The Indianapolis-based payer recorded a 43.7 percent increase in net income to $1.01 billion in the first quarter of 2017 compared to $703 million in the same period last year.
3. Louisville, Ky.-based Humana reported revenues of $13.48 billion for the first quarter of 2017, up from $12.9 billion in the first quarter of 2016. The payer saw net income of $1.12 billion in the first quarter of this year, up from $254 million in the same period of the year prior.
4. UnitedHealth Group recorded first quarter revenues of $48.7 billion, reflecting a 9.4 percent year-over-year increase from $44.5 billion in the same period the year prior. The Minnetonka, Minn.-based payer recorded net earnings of $2.2 billion in the first quarter of 2017, up from $1.6 billion in the same period a year prior.
