Jersey City, N.J., Mayor James Solomon hired an auditor to review health insurance claims paid by Horizon BCBS New Jersey, according to a March 17 news release.

Horizon BCBS New Jersey previously served as the city’s third-party health insurance administrator.

The insurer also has a history contracting with the state on employee benefits. In 2022, Bloomberg reported that New Jersey’s employee health plan paid millions more than what providers charged. That same year, New Jersey pulled back on seeking $34 million for services that allegedly were not provided to workers. In 2024, Aetna joined Horizon BCBS New Jersey as a state contractor.

Becker’s contacted Horizon BCBS New Jersey and will update this story if more information becomes available.
