Highmark Blue Shield expanding to southeastern Pennsylvania, segment president named

Highmark Blue Shield has named Dan Tropeano its first southeastern Pennsylvania segment president as the company looks to expand its service area to new parts of the state, including Philadelphia, in 2024.

Highmark plans to offer Medicare Advantage and D-SNP plans, individual and small group ACA plans, and large group fully insured and self-insured plans, subject to regulatory filings.

Mr. Tropeano has been with UnitedHealth Group for the last 15 years, where he most recently served as senior vice president and general manager of OptumRx. He was also previously CEO for UnitedHealthcare's Pennsylvania and Delaware markets, according to a Jan. 12 news release shared with Becker's.

Highmark BCBS operates in western and northeastern Pennsylvania, while Highmark Blue Shield operates in the central and now southeastern parts of the state. Highmark BCBS also operates in West Virginia, Delaware, and parts of New York.
