Health Care Service Corp. launching price transparent, 'alternative' health plan

Health Care Service Corp., parent of BCBS Illinois, Texas, Montana, Oklahoma and New Mexico, is launching an "alternative health plan" with no deductibles or copays for large, self-funded employers.

Under the new plan, members are informed upfront about expected out-of-pocket costs, and they will pay less for selecting providers with the highest rankings based on quality of care, medical appropriateness, and cost efficiency metrics, according to a Sept. 3 news release.

Members pay nothing at the time of service and instead will receive one bill at the end of each month. Members will be able to start using the new plan on Dec. 1.
