Harvard Pilgrim Health Care exits Connecticut

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care is ceasing operations in Connecticut after this year, according to the Hartford Business Journal.

The Canton, Mass.-based payer sent an email to brokers and stakeholders April 19 saying its parent company, Point32Health, "has made the difficult decision to withdraw" commercial plans from Connecticut as of Jan. 1, 2023.

Coverage for over 12,000 members will continue until their contracts end, but Harvard Pilgrim will no longer quote and sell new commercial policies.

"This decision was not taken lightly and comes after a detailed, multi-year analysis of the employer-based commercial market in Connecticut," a Point32Health spokesperson told HBJ.

Harvard Pilgrim first entered Connecticut about a decade ago, hoping to win market share with its nonprofit model, according to HBJ. The payer merged with Tufts Health Plan in 2021 to form Point32Health.

The parent company said it will now focus on Medicare Advantage in Connecticut through its existing partnership with Rocky Hill-based nonprofit CarePartners of Connecticut.
