Former Highmark employee accused of stealing funds from member's health savings accounts

A former Highmark Health employee is facing criminal charges for allegedly attempting to or withdrawing nearly $90,000 from eight member's health savings accounts, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported June 26.

The Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office charged the woman with nine counts of identity theft, eight counts each of access device fraud and criminal attempt, five counts of theft by unlawful taking, four counts of criminal conspiracy and one count of unlawful use of a computer.

"We are aware that a former employee, who resigned earlier this year, is facing a criminal complaint related to allegations of theft and fraud," a Highmark spokesperson told Becker's. "We are thoroughly reviewing this ongoing investigation and have a number of systems in place to protect our members from fraudulent activity."

According to the report, the charged individual would call customer service and reset member's account passwords to gain access to their HSAs. She worked remotely for Highmark from April 2022 to January 2023 and had access to birthday, address and phone number data.
