In 2027, Walmart is making more than 250 medications — including some GLP-1s, insulin and inhalers — available for employees at no cost.
While GLP-1s have already been available to employees with Type 2 diabetes, the drugs will be accessible for $0 with a new prior authorization, Walmart confirmed to Becker’s Oct. 13. This coverage will still apply only to employees with Type 2 diabetes in 2027.
GLP-1 spending has been putting pressure on employers in recent years. While Type 2 diabetes coverage generally persists, some organizations have been moving away from offering coverage for weight loss alone.
Kesimpta for multiple sclerosis will also be available at no cost with an approved prior authorization. Walmart’s website said it is partnering with the Cleveland Clinic and Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic through its new Rare Conditions Center of Excellence program, allowing employees free access to multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis specialists for a second opinion.
In November 2026, the company is also adding up to 12 weeks of paid neonatal intensive care unit leave for parents, which can be used in addition to standard parental and maternity leaves.
Walmart said it is raising the rates for its starting health plan by $1.50 per pay period, reaching $39.80. The company said this increase is smaller than last year’s.
“The steps we’re taking are based on years of planning and trying new things, which is allowing us to make meaningful improvements for associates without slashing benefits or significantly raising premiums,” a company spokesperson said in a statement shared with Becker’s.
As reported by Bloomberg, Walmart had historically faced scrutiny over its employee benefits but has since sought to change that narrative.
At the Becker's 5th Annual Fall Payer Issues Roundtable, taking place November 2–3 in Chicago, payer executives and healthcare leaders will come together to discuss value-based care, regulatory changes, cost management strategies and innovations shaping the future of payer-provider collaboration.
