EmblemHealth is taking its free diabetes program beyond the Bronx and into the rest of New York City, according to an April 22 news release the insurer shared with Becker’s.
The program began in October 2024 and has since reached 8,700 Bronx residents. It includes free A1C screenings, diabetes education, nutrition classes, exercise sessions and emotional support. Over 40% of EmblemHealth members in the program lowered their A1C blood sugar levels, the insurer said.
The program is not restricted to EmblemHealth members, but resources will be available at a number of the insurer’s neighborhood care locations: Cambria Heights, Clove Road, Crown Heights, Duane Street, Fordham Road and Southern Boulevard.
“The results we saw in the Bronx — where diabetes rates are among the highest in the city — make it clear that we need to keep showing up in our communities with bold ideas that address real-life barriers,” Abdou Bah, senior vice president, quality, strategy and chief health equity officer, said.
