CVS Health to lay off 521 Aetna employees

CVS Health will lay off 521 Aetna employees, according to WARN Act documents filed Aug. 18.

The layoffs will be conducted beginning Oct. 21, according to the notice. Of the layoffs, 306 employees are based at the insurer's headquarters in Hartford, Conn. The other employees work remotely but report to supervisors in Connecticut.

Positions of those laid off include executive directors, analysts, counsel and managers.

CVS Health, Aetna's parent company, said in an Aug. 1 statement shared with Becker's that it is eliminating "non-customer-facing positions" across the company.

When Woonsocket, R.I.-based CVS Health acquired Aetna, its agreement with state insurance regulators included a promise to keep employment levels at Aetna and its subsidiaries at 5,300 for at least four years after the closure of the deal. The employment levels reflected staffing as of Oct. 1, 2018, and the agreement expired in 2022.
