Covered California updates online application to let families select multiple plans

California’s state health exchange will make it possible for families who receive tax credits to purchase multiple plans online, California Healthline reported.

Covered California previously allowed only those ineligible for tax credits to purchase different plans for family members online. While enrollees who receive tax credits could request different plans for each family member over the phone, many insurance agents did not know that option existed.

Beginning this month, the 90 percent of Covered California enrollees eligible for tax subsidies will be able to select different plans for each family member when applying for health insurance online. In terms of tax credits, subsidies will be given proportionally to corresponding plans.

Exchange officials said customers should think carefully before splitting families onto different plans, especially when putting healthier family members on high-deductible health plans with more out-of-pocket costs, according to the report.
