Colorado expands Medicaid to pregnant people, children regardless of immigration status

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed legislation June 7 that will allow pregnant people, their children and all children access to Medicaid beginning in 2025, regardless of citizenship status.

Under the new law, pregnant people who would otherwise qualify for Medicaid and the Children's Basic Health Plan are eligible for coverage for up to one year after a child's birth. Anyone under 18 will also become eligible.

The legislation also immediately expands benefits for all Medicaid and CHIP enrollees through free access to lactation supplies and support services.

In 2024, a special enrollment period will open for pregnant individuals who will be able to enroll when they find out they're pregnant. The Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing will also expand their outreach efforts to eligible individuals.

The expansion is expected to cost the state $9.4 million annually by 2025, according to Colorado Public Radio.
