The waiver, which has been in place in Mississippi for women since 2003 and for men since 2015, expands Medicaid family planning services to residents ages 13 to 44 who earn up to 194 percent of the federal poverty level and are otherwise uninsured. Under the waiver, eligible residents have access to up to four annual family planning visits a year, lab tests associated with these visits such as Pap smears and STI screening, and contraceptives.
“This is the first ten-year demonstration extension in the history of CMS, and allows Mississippi to administer its Medicaid program without the inconvenience of obtaining routine approvals from CMS,” said CMS Administrator Seema Verma in a statement. “This action shows our continuing commitment to giving states the flexibility they deserve to meet the unique needs of their people.”
