CMS approves Illinois plan to expand Medicaid access for kids in schools

CMS has approved Illinois' proposal to expand Medicaid payments for school-based healthcare services.

Illinois' approved state plan amendment allows schools to receive more Medicaid funding for covered services for all children with Medicaid, rather than only those children with individualized education programs — plans tailored for children with disabilities — according to an April 18 CMS news release.

Illinois is the 12th state to expand the Medicaid payments for school-based healthcare services, according to the release. It joins Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada and North Carolina.

CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure said in the release all states are encouraged to consider the expansion.
