Cigna to pay $150K to settle alleged Virginia billing violation

Cigna agreed to pay $150,000 to settle allegations from the Virginia Bureau of Insurance that it violated state law by failing to provide required balance billing disclosures.

The department alleged that Cigna failed to provide its enrollees with an explanation of benefits that "clearly indicates whether the enrollee may or may not be subject to balance billing if it contains claims from out-of-network providers," according to the Sept. 15 settlement order.

Cigna also agreed to enter a corrective action plan. The payer did not admit or deny it violated Virginia law.
