Cigna in the headlines: 8 recent stories

From the completed sale of its international insurance businesses in six Asia Pacific markets, to plans to renovate a data center in Connecticut, here are eight headlines about Cigna since June 10. 

1. A spokesperson for Cigna, which has employees in all 50 states, told the Stamford Advocate it offers all its employees and their families travel reimbursements for certain health services and will be expanding that offer to include abortion care, gender-affirming care and behavioral healthcare in states where access is restricted.

2. Cigna on July 1 completed the sale of its international insurance businesses in six Asia Pacific markets to the world's largest property and casualty insurer, Chubb, in a $5.4 billion deal. Most of the proceeds will go toward a stock buyback.

3. The California Medical Association urged Cigna June 27 to rescind a recently announced policy the group said "effectively penalizes physicians for providing efficient, unscheduled care to Cigna enrollees." The change is set to go into effect Aug. 13. 

4. Mobile-based Ascension Health Alabama could leave Cigna's network Aug. 13 if a new deal is not reached, the Birmingham Business Journal reported June 27. 

5. Cigna is planning to renovate a 153,462-square-foot data center in Windsor, Conn., at a cost of $386 million, the Hartford Business Journal reported June 22. 

6. Cigna's pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts' $25 insulin cap program has slashed patient cost-sharing in half and improved diabetes treatment adherence, according to a new study published June 16 by Cigna health services subsidiary Evernorth.

7. Cigna is buying back $3.5 billion in common stock through accelerated repurchase agreements with Mizuho Markets Americas and Morgan Stanley, the insurer announced June 16.  

8. Cigna is one of seven payers facing a proposed class-action lawsuit filed June 10 by New Mexico medical cannabis company Top Organics-Ultra Health and six medical patients who say the insurers should be covering medical cannabis costs as a behavioral health service.
